You watch loads of films. I mean loads, you can't get enough. You start to think what you'd change in those films. What would make them better? You have urges to start writing or taking photographs or both. You're interested in people, places, and just generally curious about the world.
Those are the kinds of things that led me to film as a teenager, then I got to working in the TV/film industry and all those same things listed above came in handy.

For me, it first started with a passion to watch movies, any movie, day or night. Then I was curious as how to make them -- the process behind that often remarkable product that we see on the screen. For me, there was a natural curiosity to everything that makes a great movie. As I started studying photography, directing, screenwriting, my passion grew. Finally, I also became enamored with cinema history and ended up reading about the Lumiere Brothers, Hitchock, Godard...

I believe it was Robert Rodriguez who said, "you don't WANT to be a filmmaker, you ARE a filmmaker." When you have the urge to grab a camera and start shooting, you become a filmmaker. Also that you asked, means you want to be. Start shooting!

I think the urge of grabbing a camera and start shooting is huge sign. I felt that when I was about 13.
However, not all filmmakers are necessarily camera operators and cinematographers. I've met fine directors and producers who don't know much about the mechanics of a film/video camera.

Always had a big imagination. That kept me busy as an only child. I enjoyed storytelling. I thought I would be a novelist until I took a media production course in high school. I watched so many films growing up and loved analyzing films AND books. I was involved in journalism and photography. I was fascinated by exotic lands and people. I bought my first video camera at 16. I've always been an aesthetically minded individual.
It's the idea of seeing stories I imagined come to life. It is what most draws me to filmmaking.

Yeah, I suspect that a "big imagination" is nice clue also. I remember daydreaming stories and adventures, creating characters and challenges. If directed correctly, this creativity comes quite handy when you start writing screenplays and making movies.

Well I don't know when I absolutely knew I wanted to be a "filmmaker", but I always knew I wanted to do something creative... When I was in elementary school, I ended up drawing up a lot of comics and such (though I've never read a comicbook in my life) and just loved being able to convey the thoughts on my head and show people my ideas, and more importantly, my vision. I guess you could call this a pre-cursor to storyboarding haha ;P
Anyways, I never had access to a camera as a kid but during my first year of highschool I was finally given an opportunity to film. Though the circumstances weren't the best, I couldn't complain. 5 years later, and I have just barely gotten my first camera. Its not even a camcorder, but it shoots HD video as well, so again, I'm not complaining
Though I'm obviously most interested in being a director, if I end up as a cinematographer or editor or screenwriter, then I won't mind as much. I'm just a creative person at heart and love the arts... I just want to make sure that whatever happens, I will be able to wake up and not worry about the little problems of life. I want to wake up with an idea, and have the comfort of knowing that I will be able to see it completed in its finest form...
So yeah...
