Buy a book on photography. DOF, shutter, ISO, f-stops... it's all in there.

Do you mean the technical stuff about each specific camera? As in, the difference between a DVX100 and an HD100? Or more of what titaniumdoughnut was refering to?

this subject is something I've been curious about too (at least I think it is...I'm still not exactly sure what gdot is asking)

one thing I've been wondering is:
which is better (as far as what camcorders record on to), tapes or dvds?

I'm looking into buying a camcorder (only a handycam, not really anything proffesional due to lack of money plus I don't need it) so any other tid bits you guys might have would be awesome...

Don't buy a DVD camcorder, period. Just trust me (or, if you don't just search the web and Cnet and see why you don't want one).

There are many different areas for differences between cameras. HD vs SD, 24p vs 30p vs 60i, shoulder vs handheld, lenses, etc. If you really want to learn, use the almighty information tool: Google. And Cnet.

Or ask questions here (but you'll have to be a bit more specific).

Ok so this is kind of my gathered info about digital camcorders so far:

DVD: They suck, don't buy them...

Mini DV: the standard tape format...

Hard Drive: The lazy (and I think more crappy) version for people who don't want to mess with tapes and DVDs

HD (High Definition): the newest versions of camcorders that record to any of the above and have the best quality picture

Hi8: Closest to real film (?) but also uses Hi8 tapes

Corrections and add-ons are welcome...

Hard drive based camcorders used to be terrible, but they are getting much better, especially in instances such as the JVC Everio line. You see the use of HD's in better cameras as well, but usually as add-ons (Firestore, etc). It has its advantages: drag-and-drop of video files (which can save time), reduced amount of stuff to carry, don't have to keep track of tapes.

Some people still choose MiniDV, though, for a couple of reasons. First, it's a proven and reliable format. Also, many like to have hard copies of their footage, as hard drives on both computers and cameras can fail. With tapes, you always have a backup.

Those are some of the basics.

Hey guys, I am going to a seminar with Michael Goi, ASC on Saturday, June 19 6:00 to 9:30 pm at French Institute Alliance Française
Florence Gould Hall Theater at 55 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022.
I've heard it's really. Michael will talk about how to accomplish a feature film within limited budget, how to shoot from the POV of the various mobile, computer and web-based cameras and how he wrote the script entirely based on read occurrences, and what aesthetic choices to be made for a film that raises awareness.
Who wants to go with me?
