Welcome to Studentfilms.com, the online film discussion forum for filmmakers and students who are applying to film school, attending film school, need advice on making films, or just want to share their films with the world.
I'm not afraid to say I used to love Star Wars until episodes one through three happened. Shame on George Lucas. "Hmmmm... episode three... I'll have to come up with some UBER creative wipe transitions for this film!"
But back to the subject at hand...
I'm not saying I agree or disagree with anything. Let's say that greens don't make you more creative, rather that they just help to unlock something that's already inside of you. Still, is it really a fair fight when you consider that someone else might not do it simply knowing it's illegal? Does that not put them at some sort of creative disadvantage?
More input. In my opinion this is a great thread. I'd like to hear from more people who won't/can't touch the stuff, too.

I've been in countless situations where I could have easily tried some herb, but I never have, and probably never will. I just have too many things going on to fu** it all up with drugs. I play a varsity sport, so thats reason enough not to smoke. A lot of my friends smoke, and I don't like them any less for it. I actually get a kick out of watching them do some really dumb stuff when they're stoned. As to whether or not it boosts one's creative side, I couldn't say, but I have heard and seen some pretty crazy stuff come out of people when they're blazed.
Now alcohol, on the other hand, is another story...
It's all about experiences man. If you can expand on the experiences that you have in life, then you're good to go(if you're an artist). The more crap you have to deal with in life, the better. The more drama, the more pain the better, imo. It's artistic inspiration.
Drugs aren't all about euphoria and forgetting your problems. There's the darkness to them too. Now, aside from drugs, I've had a lot of REAL crap to deal with in my life. Real experiences. And that's a good place to channel your artistic stuff from. I don't NEED drugs, but I choose to experiment with them. Why? To experience emotions and parts of the mind that would otherwise be latent.
Face it, reefer rocks. There's no denying it. I'll be the first to admit that drugs own my soul. And all the sissies that are afraid to try it are just that- sissies. It's their loss... and I've got just the place for em: http://www.disney.com
And about the music thing... I mean what artist/filmmaker DOESN'T listen to music? Music is a big part of my life, and sure it gives me inspiration here and there, but it in no way can compete with something that totally ****s with your mind.

I think I'm more inspired by a sunset or a juicy steak than by my girlfriend cheating on me or my little sister overdosing on opium or something. I shy away from injurious things, but if you feel you need to experience pain and drama as an artist, then go for it. That's admirable.

I think one day everyone who contributed to this thread will have to all sit down together and get smashed or ripped, whichever you prefer. If you're feeling ballsy you can do both. Perhaps we can get a hold of some Absinthe.
I seriously cannot imagine the conversation that would come out of a group like this were we all under the influence of something.

Harris- True that, I was just stating that dark experiences are just as useful to an artist, as happy experiences. Sometimes you have no control over bad things. I myself, despite my hardass status, am a bit of a nature boy and love to take long walks in fields of tall white grass, with longhaired leaping gnomes etcetc. As for steaks, well they are ****ing sensational.
As for disney and the sissies, well maybe I was too hard on them. I'll tone it down a notch. Psycchhhhe
jhart- you know me, bro, I'm always down for some good ol fashioned gettogethers.
funkbomb - You're just mad cuz you're a sissy.
Seriously though Ill tone down my assholishness after this post. It was just somethin I had to say at that particular moment. Just to stir up some nerds, perhaps. But ill quit. Disney's alright, and sober people are not sissies. This message has been edited. Last edited by: FashtheStampede,

Don't know about you guys, but my dreams (seldom do I remember them) are pretty effed up. I try to write them down as soon as I wake up but oftentimes I'm too tired to bother. But with what I do remember from them, I could probably incorporate some freaky shizz into my work.
Using dreams and images from the subconcious...now that's an unfair advantage.
I have the same kind of dreams; entirely messed up. They're the definition of fubar.
In fact, at one point during the school year it got so bad that I started having dreams from a cinematic point of view. That's right; say goodbye to the first person experience. I could see myself framed up from different angles and shots as the dream progressed. I'm not making this up. It was absolutely brilliant whenever I'd have an action dream with a chase scene or something, complete with monologue, makeup, and stunts. Unfair advantage? Definitely. I'm not even conscious and I'm coming up with strokes of genius.
The best part is my dreams had a 16:9 aspect ratio. Should I start storyboarding this now or later?

"Hey! No fair. He uses his DREAMS to inspire his movies, and I don't have any dreams. He should be limited to using only his life experiences... unless they're really interesting, in which case he should have to use mine."
