Does anyone know any websites where I can get some free green/blue screen filmed stuff that I can use to practice chroma keying. The only website I found charges like $129 just for some footage of someone jumping its rediculous.

I know Detonation Films has a ton of free chroma key footage. Its all of explosions, smoke, missiles, etc. though. (no people or characters) It should be good place to start.

you'd be surprised at how easy it is to key out a flat background... as long as it's lit correctly.
basically, you can get away with other color flat backgrounds - they don't have to be blue or green. those colors are easy to key talent around because they are uncommon in clothing. lighting is VERY important - probably the most important and there are no set parameters regarding chroma, gain and other secondary suppressors to tweak the key. if you are seeing grain around talent, adjusting chroma and gain levels back and forth will help eliminate that. check for an auto-setup and aim it at the most saturated part of the picture (before the key), and you'll get a good key to start tweaking and experimenting. when lighting for chroma key, you have to make sure that the light isn't bouncing off of talent, or you will see it in the key. i hope this kind of makes sense. sorry if it's too TV. again, lighting is the most important thing. other than that, it's not too hard of a process to tweak. |

yeah...agreed. the actual computer process of chroma key replacement is very simple. Just a few clicks, and maybe a few tweaks in a handful of frames. The real part that requires the majority of practice, is setting up your characters and green screen appropriately so you can light them separately and avoid spill, etc

that's awesome you can tweak the chroma key on individual frames. it makes perfect sense. coming from the tv world where we set up chroma keys on video switchers, it's something i never considered until you brought it up. amazing. |
