Business are almost always created in order to make money. As long as McDonalds brings in a profit from its food chains, they could care less about making you smile or giving you quality treatment. Yet no one is angry at them for only caring about money.

First and second assistant directors is NOT the reason why movies suck. The first and second assistants are not involved creatively in the movie. I've worked as a first assistant and basically all we do is keep the schedule sound, making sure everything happens on time: make-up, lighting, wardrobe, rehearsals...
Most movies suck nowadays because of the committee system, which exists especially in studios. Too many people (aka producers) have influence in a movie and therefore they get sidetracked. Too many opposing ideas are incorporated in a movie, and the final product is a mess.
Independent movies don't suffer as much because producers let the director in charge (as should be), hence they are often better.

I said that independent movies are often better, but I see how this could be wrong. Low budget can ruin an independent production. As can undisciplined directors.
But I still think that independent movies are often structurally sound because they are conceptualized and directed by one person (without much influence from a committee system).
Does it make sense?
