What did people think of the five films they showed last night? I was with Michael Bey and liked his criticisms. I definitely thought Shalini's was the best.

I definitly thought that the musical one was the best (typically I hate anything with singing in it.) The timing was great, the shots were well composed, and the film was just well made all around- a good example of what these people SHOULD be creating. On the other hand, "Meet the Finklesteins" was a complete mess and I agreed with the judges 100%. Why hand held? No establishing shots? All digital? It looks like a high school film. very dissapointing. Shalini's film was alright but I feel like it lacked originality and her visual style (soft focus vs close ups) is a reality TV staple.
I haven't watched that much of the show, but I did see some wannabe vids on the site. There was this terrible "resident evil remake" and it was easily the worst thing I have ever seen in my entire life. It makes me feel good to know that those are some of my competition. They make my little high school shorts look like fricken speilberg.

Is anybody still watching this? Despite the horid format of the show, I still tune in loyally because I like to see what these people have come up with. I was hoping someone else saw that girl's "horror" movie about the man cuting down the tree. I cannot believe that her movie was the result of 4 years at NYU!!!
Well if you think about it, most of us who want an actual career in the industry didn't want to touch this show with a ten foot pole as a contestant and so they got the next tier down, ranging from the older filmmakers who this may be their only shot to the desperate younger filmmakers who think that this could actually further their career even if they don't win.

I totally agree KDProd! I thought the NYU girl's film was so so painful to watch. I felt her when she said that she wanted to tell a story from another perspective, but either she didn't learn how to tell a story in school or forgot everything she did. She's cute though.

I watched... the tree one like everyone else said "sucked", but i did feel bad for her because she coined it "horror" and then showed it to Wes. Yikes. It actually reminded me of a movie I saw on their site, whcih i think was supposed to be from a baby's POV. It sucked too.

Yea, I'm defintly not knocking her idea to show something from a new and interesting perspective. However, SOMETHING needs to happen in the movie to warrant the use of the perspective..the tree was cut down but we didn't see any effect. I kept waiting for a branch to grab her Evil Dead style, lol. Yea shes pretty cute.
