BeachTek box vs Adapter cable

So recently I upgraded to a consumer based HD camera, (Canon Vixia HFS100) and it has a phono style mini jack mic input however I want to use my XLR shotguns with the camera.

I know there are products that convert and add a preamp such as the BeachTek units but are they worth the price?

How do things such as a simple adapter cable work instead?

I'm mostly using an Azden SGM-1X shotgun mic but also have been planning to buy a Shure wired lapel.

Thanks for any and all input on the subject.
