Someone says in his website, that DV-blown-up-to-35mm-film yields better quality than 16mm-film-blown-up-to-35mm-film. And this goes against my understanding. What is your opinion/experience, friends?

That's just impossible.

DV has resolution of only 720x480. 16mm looks great blown up to 35mm. Not as good as 35mm itself...but still pretty good.

yeah, that guy is full of it. 16mm (especially Super 16) looks excellent when blown up to 35. Maybe he meant 8mm??

8mm?!....no way...8mm cannot be blown up to a 35mm screen , the resolution would be horrible. 8mm is too small to hold the information (sound and film) to support a blow up. Super 16 is very good consideringt many independant filmmakers use it to make their films. The betacam is also good for blowing up....DV cant cut it for a 35mm...

Actually I've heard good reports on how the DVX100a looks when it's blown up to 35mm. Of course it's not as great as 16mm, but if it is lit professionaly, it can look pretty good blown up. Hell, look at 28 Days Later, most people couldn't even tell it was shot digitally.

Yeah 28 days later was actually shot on Canon XL1's it was faster to shoot on those when they had to be quick for the scenes with the streets empty as hell because they had to hold back traffic. It looked a little bit grainy but it was a horror movie so it fit anyways. This has nothing to do with the overall topic but you guys know me, always wanting to say something even if its nothing at all lol

A tad off topic, but is there a book or website that has everything i ever wanted to know about using 16 mm film?

I loved the look of 28 days later...but hey, that movie had the word" DIGITAL" written all over. Digital can look good with good lenses, good color correction and no movement

8mm has actually a beautiful side blown up to 35mm....real old school.

S16 is the way to go imho, 16mm is dead. There is no single reason to shoot 16mm anymore instead of super 16

for the record, i totally agree hoeks, there is something great about blowing up 8mm. Its not very practical, but i love it.

Besides - blowing up digital gives you pixelation and compression artifacts...film gives you a dirty look, but none of the digital nasties mentioned above.

...and this is from a digital only guy! lol
