I have saved up a lot of money and was thinking about purchasing either the Canon XL1s or the Panasonic AG-DVX100. Which do you think would be the better investment?
Both arent very good....I would very much dissagree with your statement. I would say the XL1 and the Dvx100 are the best out on the market right now! You cant do this with the PD-150
You can however do this with the XL-1, and seeing some still of the DVX100 i am pretty sure it can do about as good.
I have used the PD-150, and I feel compared to atleast the XL1 it is limited.

Took the words out of my motuh Kris. Some more great grabs BTW.
By the same token, those are XL1 grabs. Here are some DVX100 grabs
Now if only they were MY grabs R. Michael

The DVX grabs look terrible. No contrast whatsoever. Everything is washed out. Yuck.

I think the XL1 and the DVX are both poorly designed in many ways. Don't get me wrong, they produce great images, but the products themselves are crap compared to the 150.
It's just my opinion. Correct me all you want.

Cyos you are looking at one set from one cinematographer. Dont mistake his style for "the look" of this camera. Ill post some other examples later, but those look a hell of a lot better than 90% of the stuff shot on MiniDV period, including the XL1 (the exception being prime lenses of course) Watch the trailer on the site those grabs came from. www.stealart.com A very "film" look.
Jswolf: Sorry, but that statment makes no sense. The only issue I have had with the XL1 is its lens being a bit on the fragile side. With all that weight up front at little holding it on I have noticed the screws often get stripped out. The DVX100 has a very similar body design to said PD-150. It has a great balance, user friendly controls and a sturdy build. My experience has been this. People who dont like the DVX100 are much like people who dont like Hi-Definition. They have never shot with it. You said it best. Those two cams produce a better picture, that is the bottom line. R. Michael

You really need to see the DVX footage on a TV in motion, full resolution to see how wonderful it is. It's pretty hard to judge from stills on the net.
From my experience the old XL-1 (not the S, which I haven't used) is about at good at the old Sony VX1000. The PD150 and VX2000 shoot better images than the xl-1 from footage that i've seen up close on a monitor.
Oh and of course I'm no film expert, just a student but who better to listen to on this subject than the friggin American Society of Cinematographers: http://www.theasc.com/magazine/product.htm
They are comparing the DVX to FILM for goodness sakes...
I haven't seen the PD-150 but I'm sure it's probably not any better than the DVX100 or XL1 or XL1s...
I've seen XL1 and DVX100 on the computer and they look the same. I use my XL1 just standard and it looked as good as that DVX100 thing about that tizzy linked us to - if not better.
My personal pick would be XL1 or XL1s

AFC, i disagree completely but of course you are entitled to your opinion. I just shot a wedding (not something I do on a regular basis!) and I shot with a DVX100 and another veteran shooter who has shot 2 full lengths on super 16 shot on a canon xl-1. He's easily more than twice the age of me... We did not coordinate and I haven't seen the footage yet, but probably by tomorrow I will post pics and maybe some full rez video that should be played out through firewire from both cameras.
AFC prez, please post some video or at least a still of whatever you shot that looks better than "Art History". It seems you have 500 posts, but no actual work or even pics from your work on this site or your website... just an observation. You seem to heavily criticize others without showing any work of your own. Anyway, I'm not challenging you or anything- I'm not one to rip on other student filmmakers (at least in public). I'm just curious to see where you are coming from. If whatever you shot does look better than "Art History", I'll be one happy dude!
Okay. I'll try to get a still up within the next week.
Does anyone know where i can upload like 5 seconds of footage for free?
Also, The one master I have of "blind date" was ruined. I still have it but the tape has twisted inside the case - is there a way to salvage this so I only have to re-edit a few seconds instead of the entire thing?
JS, maybe one was film and the other was miniDV (or they could have used both cameras...
Those clips didn't show anything... the cameras looked the same to me and not very good at that. after taking a second look the DVX100 is a lot better... or I think it is.. I don'tknow that wasn't enough info.
By the way, you're not ranting on me. You have nothing to rant about, My choice in camera or yours isn't something we could every fight/argue about.
and keep your eye on color saturation specifically on the background and on the actresses face. Remember this was after a 35mm blow up so many "film like" movments are there due to the transfer. Most of us cant afford this, and the DVX100 produces that look without the blowup. Even so its nice to see a comparision and see how well the DVX held up. R. Michael

The DVX 100 is a million times better that the pd 150. It looked like the whole light scheme changed on the pd 150. The Key was so harsh on the pd 150, the dvx was very smooth and warm.
PD 150...not even in the same ball park as the dvx100!

I can make the XL1 (with the standard stock manal lense) look better than those "Art History" stills. It would be hard mind you...cause they are excellent! but with the right light, shooting in -3db, the xl1 if lit properly can look better that the dvx100. Now I dont know if they had there pics resized, but the dvx seems to put out a bigger image, and I know they didnt shoot "Side-by-Side's" for the whole movie.
Still have respect for the dxv100 though!!

JSwoolf- sorry,i wrote my message kinda quick- the guy has shot several stuff previous on super 16 and 35 and he shot the wedding with an xl1. if ya go to my site, he shot the "where the air is cool and dark" trailer on super16. -- Clyde www.partypooperfilms.com
