you should definitely check out the panasonic dvx 100b. its a little over 2k but its a great camera. theres no doubt that it is under the shadow of the hvx (its newer hd counterpart) but none the less still a great camera.

I used teh dvx 100b for a short film and it was a great little camera.

DVX100b. All the way. You will not get a better camera for the price in terms of usability and the control you have over the image.

I have to agree that the DVX 100b is probably the absolute best you can get in it's price range. I've used it pretty extensively and if I had to buy a camera that wasn't HD, the DVX 100b is probably the only one I would consider.

This post is two years old - I wouldn't recommend a DVX for the budget anymore. I'd take a used HMC150 or a new HMC40 for that budget.
