Need advice on a camera please!

Hello guys,

I recently received a "Sony DCR-SX41 Flash Memory Handycam Camcorder 60x Zoom" from my professor which I can't express to him how grateful I am for the gesture. It costs around $300-325 right now. He bought it for me because he knew I'm totally broke and financially on my own, since my family isn't really supportive.

But when I took it home, I realized it wasn't an HD camera nor was it really compatible with my Macbook Pro, which I use for editing and etc.

My questions are:

1.) Should I ask him to exchange it for an HD (and feel really bad) or should I just keep it?

2.)How important is it for me to have an HD camera as a beginning student filmmaker?

3.) What camera should I get that's around $300-400?

Any answers or advice to what I should do in this situation would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!
