Want an inspiring story? Back around 1997 a guy named Joe Carnahan (native to my town Sacramento, CA) started his first movie "Blood Guts Bullets & Octane" a super low budget crime/comedy. I made a point to see it...but never did till last year. One reason I had wanted to see it was because a critic compared the director, Joe Carnahan, to QUENTIN TARANTINO...so I just HAD to see this movie....boy was I dissapointed. The only way I can see them comparing to Quentin is that both directors have guns in their movies. That's basically the connection. The film was TERRIBLY boring...dull dialogue...and scenes that dragged on...not to mention a cliched plot and BAD ending. The thing that makes me so pissed is that today I just found out this Joe Carnahan is directing Mission: Impossible 3!!! Now I know a lot of you out there, like me, are against sequels. But when you think about it...Mission:Imposible is a big f****** franchise...sh**. But what inspires me about Carnahan is that he made such a sh**** first movie...I mean...sh**. It sucked...yet now he's working with Tom f****** Cruise and Ving F****** Rhames!!!!!!!!!!!! He's a f****** player!!!!! So It inspires me because I can say, with no ego, that given a few thousand, good actors, and about 3 GOOD cameras....I could make a totally bombed assed better movie than his!!!
I heard that HArrison Ford said Joe Carnahan was his favorite director....holy sh**.
Carnahan recently hit big again with his film "Narc" starring Ray Liotta. RAY LIOTTA!! STAR OF GOODFELLAS!!! Sh**!
But don't take my word for all this...go out and watch "Blood Guts" ...seriousely...watch it...you'll watch it...and if you have ANY talent you'll KNOW you could make a better film.
I mean he is from SACRAMENTO...CA!!! and he's making Mission Impossible 3!!!!!!!!! That's HUGE on his RESUME!!! Serousely check out his 1st film...you'll wonder how the f*** he's making Mission:Impossible 3.
I HATE you JOE. Look at this guy..you know he'ssmiling because he's thinking, "That's right...I made a sh**** film and I'm now working with Tom Cruise...BWA-HA-HA!!!!" Ass.

BGBO is certainly not a masterpiece, but what it did was show that Joe could direct with his own style. And that's important, because Hollywood can throw any good story under a director with a style they like, which seems to be happening with Carnahan.
I didn't think BGBO wasn't as sh*tty as you... I just thought it was over written. But, there was enough creative energy and style to make it worth watching. So, now Hollywood isn't necessarily going to hire him as a writer, but he showed he could direct.

His style is really just a cross between Robert Rodriguez and John Woo...
one thing I really didn't like about the movie was his constant "zooming" in and out on CUs while people were talking...It was like he was building tension...but it didn't work...it just went overboard.
Also the dialogue...one scene I didn't find that well directed was the part where the two salesmen are arguing with Ray about the "list". I just found the dialogue really weak...the characters, mostly Carnahan's, kept repeating the same thing OVER and OVER....it sunk in the first time...it was VERY overacted and not rehearsed enough times...obviousely.

kyle no it wasn't the best movie and i was a little dissapointed comparing it to some of the reviews. The dialouge was colorful but wasn't tarantino good but it was still good and the oliver stone camera work was well made for the story it wasn't just some rip off. Yet what he really pulled off was engrossing you totally in a story with the amount of money he spent. Good performances, no student film cliches to keep you distracted, and an original story. it wasn't excellent but still better than most of the hollywood products of today. Second of all its not right for you to playa hate on anybody that has learned from his mistakes (which aren't many) look at Narc, man it's one of the best films to come out of last year only his second film. you wanna see talent and squabbles of a true hollywood player check out his BMW film Ticker. Sure the stories ok but he can really do action good. If we sat here and playa hated on everyone's first movie on this site we'd be here all day but seriously go see his film on bmwfilms.com and go see Narc and then judge. Remember not every director is an awesome writer.

Has anybody seen Narc? Holy cow this movie was very good. I liked it alot and plan to buy it when it comes out. The ending was so cool! It was one of those good cop/bad cop movies that you think you have figured out halfway throught the movie, but then when the ending came, I totally wasn't expecting it. I recommend it to anyone who likes very gritty and hard core cop movies. And I loved the opening chase scene of the movie. It was shot on a handicam and it was going VERY fast, over fences and all over the place. WATCH THIS MOVIE! I have complete faith that Joe can make a good M:I3. As for Blood Guts and whatever... never seen it. But watch Narc, because that one ruled.

I've been wanting to see it just to see how much he, Carnahan, can do with more money and better actors. Do you know WHEN it comes out on video/DVD???

You kind of answered the "Why him?" question within your first post. "NARC"
It was an amazing film. Well directed, well done, ect. They say you are only as good as your last film. That works both for good, and bad alike. His last film was great, and his style is somewhat of a hybrid. You called it Robert Rodriguez mixed with John Woo. I might even toss a little Jonathan Demme in there. MI2 was Woo, MI3 will be the hybrid.
Ofxcourse, if MI3 blows, he will fall victim to the nasty side of "Your only as good as your last film."
