African films are relatively unpopular as compared to films from other parts of the world. What could be the causes? How do viewers from America and Europe receive African films?

Question:
How do viewers from Europe and America, Japan and China receive African films? Are African films distributed in these areas? Which are the main distributors?

Choices:
Many have not watched an African film
Americans generally prefer American films

I once watched a Nigerian t.v. show series. It was so awful! Mostly due to really bad acting skills.
I can't speak for the whole continent because I have not been exposed to many native African filmmakers. Any good recommendations?
I think Americans should be exposed to films from all around the world. I get quite bored with the Hollywood formula. I prefer European over American. Specifically, French, German and then British. I also like some Bollywood films such as A Peck on the Cheek and Devdas. Smile

There are a host of not so known African films and filmmakers with very differents approaches. The Nigerian home videos are not particularly what I'll recommend. Lay hands titles such as YEELEN by Souleyman Cisse; TILAI by Idrissa Ouedraogo; HEREMAKONO by Abderhamane Sissako; MACADAM TRIBU by Jose Zecka Laplaine...just to name a few.

I personally can't wait for someone to make "Things Fall Apart" into a film. One of my top 5 or so favorite books. As for african films, can't say I've seen any, but I'll check out the recs because it's important for me to get as many perspectives as can be reasonably attained.
