I've been away on vacation, and while I was gone I got to spend some time watching a few interesting films. Some good. Others not so good. One I did like a lot was Solaris. I think it is a great film to study. However it is not a commercial film, meaning it isn't sellable. For me it was a great look at death and afterlife. It had some amazing camerawork and the editing was amazing. George Clooney did a fine job, even though I could name many other actors that would have preformed just as well. Nevertheless he did good.

Which brings me to something, the thing I really liked about this film was the lack of credits at the beginning of the film. I always found credits kind of distracting. Either you don't read them because they are off to the side, or they are out front while nothing is going on in the back. I like this for non mainstream dramas and intense films, it seems to launch held long into the film instead of making you wait even more.

I definetly recommend this film to any student filmmaker.

I just watched it and... I got this weird vibe from it. I don't know what it was, it just creeped me out. It really felt like being alone in dead space, some may find that really boring, but it brought me into the movie and I really enjoyed it. The ending reminded me of "2001" and the great old sci-fi movies. Great movie.

See Tarkovsky's original, then... The film itself is good (either version) but you have to get past the languorous pacing. It's definitely not "entertainment" per se.

"I always found credits kind of distracting."

If you made a movie, wouldn't you want your name on it?
