Very interesting. Thanks for another link. Gallo sounds like a guy who rethinks his life 10 times a day. I appreciate him more since reading that, and I really must give The Brown Bunny a viewing now; I'd been meaning to do that for awhile. Honestly, I liked everything about Buffalo '66 save Gallo's performance. At points he's brilliant -- mostly during his private interaction with Ricci -- but he seemed so self-conscious the rest of the time.

I'll post something somewhere after I see Brown Bunny, Evan, as you seem to be the biggest proponent of the film I've encountered.

Oh... I hope not. I think of Wes Anderson as a purveyor of moderately-entertaining 'indie' films that can easily become annoying in anything other than small quantities. There are far worse directors but I wouldn't cite him as an example of a substantive 'voice' in current movies.

Argh, reading comprehension is dead.

The original point of the topic was about the French New Wave, I was making the point that alot of new directors are influenced by movements of the past and use the techniques in a more enjoyable and relevant way. So you don't have to suffer though "La Strada" pretending you "get it" when you can watch a ken Loach film and actualy be blown away. So wether its Vincent Gallo or Wes Anderson the point is you don't be 100% devoted to movements of the past when we have great directors at work today.

But if you want to find the true voice of modern american cinema you need to hit up the festivals .

oh I almost forgot, Wes Anderson can beat up your dad.

Yeah, I hear Vincent Gallo is filming an AE commercial now too, though its screening will be very exclusive because of the fellatio scene he demanded.

I know the topic kind of changed, but a comment to independant filmmaking being at its high point; part of the arguement was in readily available technology at dropping prices. Yeah, we have that; the result, more videographers and filmmakers. That doesn't make more talent. There's also more likeliness that the skilled writers, directors, etc. can get out there, but but sometimes we have to wade through a lot of crap to find them. That topic ended a page or two back, though, so feel free to continue name dropping.
