Any thoughts on these? I'm pretty disgusted about no nominations for "The Fountain." And just as disgusted for all the nominations for "Babel." It's up for best score???

Beh. The Academy doesn't quite understand things the way filmmakers do. They're a bunch of old retired actors and producers... they just nominate things with people they know in them.
However, apart from the lack of nods for The Fountain, Children of Men being left out of the biggies (of which it might have deserved a nod for best direction at least) and some kind of odd choices for leading roles - these oscar noms only go to show how bad last year was in film.

Children of Men got shafted. I've seen The Queen, Babel, and Little Miss Sunshine and CoM were far better than all of those. Fountain got screwed as well. Whatever, the Academy sucks.

Ugh...Children of Men was not the best directed film of the year. It was a decent film...I enjoyed it...it was FAR, FAR, FARRRR from perfect (as far from perfect as little miss sunshine). Pan's Labyrinth was on a whole other level...notes on a scandal, cache, united 93, and the queen were all much better directed films than Children of Men. Good movie. Not great. Definitely not the best directed of the year.

Also...I REAAAALLLLLLY want Scorsese to win the oscar....he deserves it simply for losing with the films Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas (2 of them ranking in probably the top 25 films ever made, not just in america). However, I don not believe The Departed was the best film of the year...for awhile I did, but I do no more. It's sad that it's going to fit in with the other obligatory oscars like Denzel's. These are people who undisputedly SHOULD have won the damn thing before...and now they're probably going to get one for a work that isn't even close to being on par with their crowning achievement.

Children of Men definately deserves more than they're giving it. Little Miss Sunshine over that for best picture? That's a bowl of crock and everyone knows it (I know I'm going to get a whole LMS was soo incredibly good rant right after this from someone, but I don't care). Children of Men is the most intense real movie I believe I have ever seen. I have seen countless war movies, I've played numerous war games, but this was THE feeling of being shot at, of being in a war. Nothing has ever captured that feeling like this movie has. This movie brings out feelings that I thought before could only be brought out on a real battlefield. If it had just at least got a Best Director nomination, I would've been more content, but this is downright robbery and proves that the Oscars mean NOTHING.
On a side note, how the hell does Borat get a writing nomination, when it's pretty much a reality movie? Sure they had to come up with ideas and such, but there's no way that movie had a script, most of it is reactions and improvisation. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie and thought it was funny, but I don't believe it deserves any awards or nominations.
It wasn't "sooo good," and honestly, neither was Children of men. They're both middleweight films compared to the big three this year. Either way, it's been a really weak year for movies. Half Nelson is the best film of the year.

what are you guys talking about? little miss sunshine was probably the best movie of the year, and children of men was not that good. i dont know why they compared it to blade runner, it was far from that. at least little miss sunshine had dark humour and interesting characters. children of men had a very outragous cgi shot of julianne moore getting wacked and the cliche "blood on the camera" that makes it look so intense. the only good thing about that movie was michael cane.

I don’t understand why it is that everyone cares some much about the Oscars. How could you, possibly, take the opinion of "The Academy" seriously? They nominated Eddie Murphy for best supporting actor! LMAO!
Dude...Blade Runner wasn't very good. Children of Men was a much better film than blade runner, but hardly among the best films of the year. Little Miss Sunshine was absolutely not the best film of the year...I don't care what your opinion is, if you think that's it's the best film of the year, you are wrong and have not seen Half Nelson. Half Nelson is the year's best American Picture. It's probably the best of the past two years.

I know everyone has their own opinions, but you guys sound ****ing ridiculous. I'm not even answering to the little miss sunshine praise anymore. But not giving Children of Men some recognition is ridiculous. Middleweight? You can't deny the directing was good if not great. And the story was good because even though it had some cliches, it didn't play on it. Cauron pulled some great filmmaking moves here, and it just adds to the story. We have some great characters, it's a believable future. No flying cars, no insane inventions. I felt like I could connect to this world. The characters felt human without being sappy. It didn't feel like they were trying to cram a lesson down your throat every two seconds. They didn't bother trying to explain WHY babies couldn't be made anymore. In fact, most of the plot isn't even important. It's more about the main characters reaching their destination, and most importantly, it entertained the hell out of me. It sucked me in.

Yes this movie has cgi, but it was used well. They used it when they had to, and it never (imho) looked "outrageous." The baby being the closest to looking like that, even though it was still pretty amazing for cgi. I'm pretty sure most of Julianne Moore getting shot was squibs/blood effects, even though they probably touched some of it up in post, there was blood all over in the car, on Clive and on her.
Lots of you guys easily dismiss Children of Men, and to combat the comeback, I didn't like Little Miss Sunshine because I have seen countless other movies that work the same way (I know they aren't identical, but they are similar in style and whatnot). I have never seen a movie with the same style and look as Children of Men, it is unique. That doesn't necessarily make it good, but in this case it definately does.
(Children of Men) Very good movie, very good directing. Far from great on either side.
(Little Miss Sunshine) A throwaway fun film that gained audience appeal at sundance, nothing more, nothing less.
HALF NELSON=Best American Film in 2 years.
THE DEPARTED=Best Scorsese film since Casino
PAN'S LABYRINTH=Best thing Del Toro has or will ever make...def one of the best picks of the year.
THE QUEEN=Best Frear's film since The Grifters.
BABEL=Inarritu's disjointed style has become more spectacle now..it was fantastic in Amorres Perros, but I really don't think he should use it as his trademark anymore...I understand its stylistic and metaphorical purpose, but it's getting old.
Half Nelson, Volver and The Wind that shakes the Barley are the best films this world created this year though. No way does Little Miss Sunshine deserve a best picture nod...but then again, there have been a lot of other undeserving movies in the past. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Hall,

Just because you haven't seen a movie with the same look orstyle doesn't make it unique. Again...this was a very solid film. It wasn't great. Initially I really enjoyed it because it appeals more viscerally the first time. I went back to see it, and its imperfections become very apparant. Bery good film...by no means great.
