This is without a doubt one of my favorite films. Simply, I find the cinematography amazing. I think the location of the filming is attributed to it, but I also think that it comes from Edward Zwick's direction.
I've been given mixed opinions from friends, so I am curious to hear all of your opinions on it.

I loved it. Obviously it's not the best film of all time, and I think some people go to the cinema with expectations that are too high. That's why I enjoy 99% of the films that I see (except for the ones that are REALLY bad, and no number of rose-tinted specs are possible to disguise it). It also had a great score as well
One thing I didn't like was that it's impossible to forget that it's Tom Cruise, and so it's difficult to emphasise with the character. The same goes for people like Brad Pitt.

it was alright in my opinion.... a stronger ending would have made a better film. i don't know how closly it followed what actually happened, but, wasn't the ending a bit weak somehow?

I tend to go into a theatre expecting a good movie as well, or at least an entertaining one.
Also, I do agree that the ending was weak; the closure could have been less "Hollywood," but then again this makes our films look even better To me the story did carry a solid point of expressing the importance of integrity in one's life. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Nightingale,

I loved The Last Samurai. It was one of the movies that really makes me want to see it again and yes the ending could have been better.
I liked the location where they made it. It made it look more "real" I think, heh I have loved samurais for a long time so this might be one of my favorite movies

Incredible film with incredible cinematography. I was with 5 of my friends when I saw it in the theater and not one of us had a dry eye during the final battle. Powerful stuff.

Yeah, I was laughing my ass off too. How many times did Tom Cruise get shot? Oh well, you can't have Tom Cruise die in a film. Remember "Far and Away" anyone?

more proof that films like Scarface are the real films with balls.
If I ever got the chance to work with Tom Cruise, I'd have him die in the first ten minutes of the film; Butt-raped on a slab of meat then decapitated.

Thats what I love about the movie "Executive Decision" with Kurt Russel and Halle Berry (and no she doesn't get nude). I hate Steven Seagal like few other actors (cept maybe Cruise) and he died within the first like 30 minutes it was awesome. I couldn't belive he finally died!

erm..okay i liked the film..and realise i may be the only UKer..but it bugged me how an american rocks up in japan, and somehow learns how to be a better samurai than them, just during the winter!!!
and then is the last one left!!!
and it did drag a bit...but yeah, it was beautiful and entertaining... worth seeing on the big screen too.

That is one of the few moments of pure film genius.

I find it interesting that many people I've talk to about the film interpret the title "The Last Samurai" as being in reference to Tom Cruises character.
However, maybe it's just me, but I view the title as being plural rather than singular, referring to the final group of samurai rather than the American being the last one.
Anyhow, that's my 2¢
