M. Night is bringing us another supernatural thriller, I guess he can't get away from them. Trying to harp on his semi success of Signs, M. Night will be releasing The Village, starring Joequim Phoenix and William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver. It is about a Village (go figure) that is surrounded by woods filled with creatures. These creatures are now going to wage war on the Village, but Phoenix comes and tries to save the day (go figure).
Personal thoughts, M. Night is digging a grave for himself. He has an awesome style, but his recent movies list like this
Sixth Sense = A Unbreakable= D Signs= B The Village= ?
IU think he should try and do something different than supernatural thrillers, how about a criminal thrilller? I hope for his sake that it is good. Because he is losing his audience one by one.
I think it looks good. And I don't blame him for doing more thrillers; that's what he's good at. That's his forte. A lot of directors stick to genres that interest them or they're just good at (Hitchcock - mystery, Tarantino - crime, Speilberg - science fiction, David Fincher - thriller, George Lucas - science fiction, etc). I even find myself doing the same thing. I have no problem with it.
I like M. Night's films, I'm just scared that he is going to lose popular support. All of those directors you name even do different films.
Hitchcock did Psycho, To Catch a Theif, Vertigo, The Birds.
Tarantino is doing Kill Bill
Speilberg did Indiana Jones, The Goonies, The Money Pitt, The Color Purple, Hook, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, Cath Me If You Can
Fincher has even done music collections
and George Lucas wants nothing to do with film anymore, he is content with Jones and Star Wars.
Sure M. Night can keep trudging away at thrillers, but he needs to realize that to be world renowned, (Hitchcock or Speilberg) you need to do different genres. He style is awesome, but he is beating the genre to death.
Sometimes we heed the words of critics before we heed our heart
I saw a trailer for The Village, and I think it is going to be pretty good, and probably pretty scary. M. Night is great with Suspense.
I also thought that Unbreakable waws very well done. The cinematography set a really good tone for the picture. It felt like a suspense comic book. I liked it a lot actually.
I linked you guys to the trailor about 4 months ago and people yelled at me saying that The Village is getting bad reviews script wise and blah blah blah. All i have to say is that his visual styles are incredible... unbreakable is my favorite movie by him I just loved how he did shots in one take the way he did. For example the whole opening scene on the train the camera just panned back and forth between bruce willis and the girl on the train. I felt like i was on the train with them for some reason it just pulled me in. And in the defense of the script getting bad reviews I just laugh because everyone looks at movies and ideas diffrently. So many people say that Sixth Sense is Night's best movie where in my opinion both signs and unbreakable were much better and to me more suspensfull. I guess we will have to wait and see how things go, but you better believe I'm going to be there opening day in full support of one of my favorite film makers.

Yes, I know that. My point was that the directors have specific things that they're good at that they tend to repeat. I wasn't saying that's ALL they do.
i belive "the Village" was filmed pretty close to where i live, but then again i'm from outside of philly, so pretty much all of his movie were filmed near me.
Actually, Speilberg produced Money Pit and Goonies. I would consider producing part of "doing" a film, but I guess it doesn't mean that to some.
I like all of M. Night's films, and they all have seemed different to me. Sixth Sense was scary. Unbreakable was dramatic. And Signs was thrilling. I wouldn't be too quick to say that he has been doing the same thing too much. But it would be cool if he did a criminal film of some sort. I could have seen him doing L.A. Confidential or The Usual Suspects.
