| I don't think that time period is of any relevance when you are discussing the best movies of all time. Just because it was groundbreaking at the time doesn't make it the best of all time.
Good movies transcend time. If it's good now it will be good sixty years from now. Could it be one of the most influential movies of all time? Sure.
I personally am not crazy about Citizen Kane. Touch of Evil was way better in my opinion.

 | Cannibal probably just posted the most intelligent reply to Citizen Kane ever. It makes total sense, easy to understand, doesn't defend the film, just states everything in clear English. Its everything I've always wanted to say about it, but couldn't because I can't think very well. NOTE: NO SARCASM -TacoWagonProductions "Kyle Johnson, definately my favortie of all. He is brilliant. | I disagree- I think things (films, artworks, books, whatever) are very tied to their contexts. While some stories have lasting value (the Bible, for example), they require new interpretation in new contexts. I think people are starting to realize that Kane is out of its context, and also beginning to reinterpret it. I suppose the question is whether it will bear scrutiny in a modern context.
Granted, the fact that the Bible is still relevant (to varying degrees) attests to its value as a great work (quite apart from the religious value it has to some). | | | | Posts: 28 | Location: New Haven, CT, USA | Registered: January 29, 2003 |

| i think ppl r afraid. of what u say? well of being conformed. i dont blame em. i mean who doesnt want to be that first person to sya citizen kane is the greatest film ever, than have everyone follow along. it nice. so ppl may hate it or like it but because it is built up so much it distorts ur expectations and maybe in a wanting to be distinct, u dislike it. or maybe u wanna be accepted or feel u know the truth when u say its the greatest film ever. | | | |

| if you slept through half of it, what right do you have to judge it?
i can see why many dont think its the best film of all time, i certainly dont. its not one of my favorites either, but i still apreciate it for what it meant. and if youre going to compare it to movies that s hit on it, then atleast pick films that came out in the same time frame. hell, fifty years from now brave heart may be shi tted on, donnie darko may be sh itted on (i doubt it, but damnit im trying to make a point!) and the flicks you listed are highly entertaining. ill be the first to admit, citizen kane is not a movie you watch to be entertained.
wait..am i starting to contradict myself here?
