In case anyone was following the little distribution controversy for the film, here's a press release I got this week.
BOB AND HARVEY WEINSTEIN'S FELLOWSHIP ADVENTURE GROUP TO FORM COALITION TO HANDLE RELEASE OF MICHAEL MOORE'S PALME D'OR WINNING FILM
NEW YORK, June 1, 2004 - Harvey and Bob Weinstein through the Fellowship Adventure Group, the newly created special-purpose company, have made arrangements for Michael Moore's Palme D'Or winning FAHRENHEIT 9/11 to be released. Under this arrangement the Fellowship Adventure Group will join with Lions Gate Films and IFC Films to distribute the film in theaters in the United States. Pay TV rights will be handled by Showtime, Lions Gate's Pay TV partner. The film will reach theaters nationwide on June 25th.
The Weinsteins through the Fellowship Adventure Group will personally finance and control distribution and marketing. They have appointed creative advertising and marketing consultant Matthew Cohen as marketing director for this company to create and oversee all marketing materials. Ken Sunshine Consultants has been hired to handle PR for the company and will work closely with the Weinsteins and the coalition on the film's release.
"With Frodo (Harvey) and Sam (Bob) now in charge of the Fellowship, I welcome the addition of Lions Gate and IFC to our quest in bringing good family entertainment to the viewing public," says Michael Moore. "Jon Feltheimer (now head of Lions Gate) produced my series 'TV Nation' and IFC produced my series 'The Awful Truth.' Not only am I in good hands, I am grateful to them now that everyone who wants to see it will now have the chance to do so -- thanks to the record number of screens on which they plan to open it. On behalf of my stellar cast - GW, Dick, Rummy, Condi and Wolfie - we thank this incredible coalition of the willing for bringing 'Fahrenheit 9/11' to the people."
"This is a true coalition," said Harvey and Bob Weinstein. "The passion that Lions Gate, IFC Films and Showtime have demonstrated reflects our desire to enable Michael Moore's extraordinary work to be viewed by as many filmgoers as possible as soon as possible."
The Weinsteins have initiated an alliance with several key industry players. It is anticipated that other names will shortly be added to the coalition as partnerships on other distribution avenues are announced.
"Michael Moore is a brilliant creative talent, and we are honored to handle his latest film," said Lions Gate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. "Lions Gate is a natural home for FAHRENHEIT 9/11. Michael, along with Harvey and Bob Weinstein, have invested tremendous passion in this powerful and riveting film, and we are confident that we can match their passion and ingenuity in distributing it to a national audience. We are delighted to join with IFC to maximize the theatrical potential of FAHRENHEIT 9/11, which promises to be one of this year's seminal cinematic events."
"Everyone at IFC Films is thrilled to be working again with Michael Moore. Michael's is one of the most important voices speaking today, and IFC Films is an ideal home for Michael and FAHRENHEIT 911," stated IFC Entertainment President Jonathan Sehring. "Ten years ago, IFC established its reputation by providing independent film makers with a strong voice for their most personal projects. It is IFC's belief that such passion projects have always taken an important historic role in encouraging debate and being a catalyst for differences of opinions. The united team of IFC Films, Lions Gate, Harvey and Bob creates a solid and balanced partnership that ensures the creation of a strong grassroots distribution strategy and respects the original timetable of Michael Moore and his team. We are delighted to be teaming up with Lions Gate Films to distribute what will be considered one of the most exciting and important films in recent memory."
The Weinsteins will continue to use the Wild Bunch, the Paris-based sales agent, for negotiating international distribution arrangements. Wild Bunch has already put several international distribution deals in place.
Lions Gate Entertainment is a premiere independent producer and distributor of motion pictures, television programming, home entertainment, family entertainment and video-on-demand content. Its prestigious and prolific library of approximately 8000 titles is one of the largest in the entertainment industry. The Lions Gate brand name is synonymous with original, daring, quality entertainment in markets around the globe.
IFC Entertainment consists of IFC Productions, a production company that provides financing for select independent feature films and offers filmmakers unusual creative freedom to realize their personal cinematic visions; IFC Films, a leading theatrical film distribution company bringing the best of independent and specialized films to theaters; and InDigEnt, an initiative for established filmmakers to explore the medium of digital video.
AWESOME!!! i cannot wait to see this! i LOVED bowling for columbine as well as roger and me. i can't say i agree with EVERYTHING the man says and does in his films...but his perspective is way too interesting to NOT want to watch.
i hadn't see ANY of his work until i took field prodcution and digital editing in fall 2002. my prof was freakin' awesome and showed us parts of roger and me...really turned on my mind and shifted my interest a bit towards documentary filmmaking. though, my prof herself is a documentary filmmaker, so maybe that had something to do with it too.
*circles june 25th on her calendar* i'll be moved to nyc before then...oh yeah!
----------------------------- wiggle your big toe.
Check out his other movies "The Big One" (Documentry while on book tour) and "Canadian Bacon" (John Candy), plus his t.v. shows "The Awful Truth" and "TV Nation." He also has three great books "Downsize This: Random Threats From An Unarmed American", "Stupid White Men", and "Dude, Where's My Country?"
I think it will at least be as good as Bowling for Columbine, it just depends which issues you're more sensitive to. He's a crazy guy, that's for sure, so his work is always interesting.
Nothing short of profound. It was so well done, and it really made you think. It's a tad different style than that of Bowline for Columbine, but good nonetheless. Oscar winner for sure. Dont hesitate, go see this film.

Yea, I just saw it in a sold out showing at a local arthouse that was hosting the movie. I think the real power in the film isn't the fact that it's trashing bush, but the fact that the movie is making average americains go out and talk about politics. Regardless of whether they agree or disagree with the views in the movie, they are finally talking about what is going on in this country. And I think that is wat makes this film so great. Also Micheal Moore is a masterful storyteller, and yea sure he's got his own political agenda to follow, but he still has been able to create a fantasticly entertaining movie that has been able to stirr up our nation. Go out and see it!
Great movie, Moore has doen it again and fixed olf flaws that made BFC not so respectable by all sides...Bush makes himself look worse than any film maker could edit him to look. This film will go down in history.
GOOD BYE BUSH IN 2004, ****er.

I will never understand America and its politics. Even though I've lived here all my life . . .
Bush loses sleep every night to make sure every one of us is safe in our little cribs at night. Our economy is better then it was under Clinton's administration, don't listen to TV talk, check out the numbers for yourself. Bush doesn't believe in big government, has lowered taxes, etc. Kerry, well, he might as well be a communist. (Voted most liberal in the Senate). Kerry wants to raise gas prices. If Kerry were president right now: -Iraq would still be under oppression. -homeland Security would be at an all time low. -Taxes and gas prices would be at an all time high. and numerous other things.
I have never seen a Moore film, and I never will. I refuse to give support to that nut case.
He may make a good movie, but I will not support what is wrong.
The man talks trash because people like to hear it, there are hardly ever facts in his statements. He doesn't know anything, he just talks and makes dockumentarys because he like your money, likes ruining people's lives, and likes hearing himself talk.
The original purpose of film was not to spread lies. -GWB '04

I thought the film was okay. It had some wonderful moments, but it sort of lost it's focus towards then end. I thought his previous films (Roger and me and BfC) were more informative than this film. Much of the film was said/shown on the major networks throughout the last 18 months.
There you go again, Travis; turning a discussion about a film into mud slinging politics. You don't know and can't prove anything you stated in your post. Start a new topic, dude. Or watch the film and comment on it specifically in this thread. Regardless, I'll be interested to see the law suits unfold regarding all the lies you allege Moore made in the film.
The purpose of film is to Entertain, Inform, and/or Educate. It has nothing to do with telling the truth.

That sentence is a contradiction of itself. All of the facts presented in the film are public record and are...true.
He does edit everything together to further drive it home.
The facts check up. His interpretation may of the facts may be different than other people...but the fact remains...that everything that was presented in the film is in public record.
Maybe I did state that wrong. He tells facts, but he twists them to his own point of view.
Its like looking at a graph. If crime rate went from 2 to 4, it is a very small increase, but if you put 2 inches between each point, you can make it look like a whole lot.
joren, no apologies for my statements. Afterall, Chris did say, this can be political as long as we keep it clean. I stated my opinion on Michael Moore and his "filmmaking" and I'm sticking to it.

Bush loses sleep every night to make sure every one of us is safe in our little cribs at night. (dont make me laugh)
Our economy is better then it was under Clinton's administration, don't listen to TV talk, check out the numbers for yourself. (LMAO!!!! WHere are you getting your information? www.weLOVEbush.com???)
Bush doesn't believe in big government, has lowered taxes, etc. (the only fools with signifigant tax breaks are the fools that work at places like ENRON)
Personally, I hate both Kerry and Bush... But when it comes time to voting, I am going to have to go with the lesser evil, I guess....
