Ok, so my dream is to become a film director (probably like everyone else in here! Big Grin)

the problem is, what should I do? Should I go to a film school and gain a BA and then go for an MA or should I just study something else as an undergraduate and then go for the MA?

I live in Spain but I'd definitely like to go to the US for the MA (preferably somewhere like AFI), but if I did go for the BA, where should I go? I was thinking about the UK but the good film schools I've heard of there are only graduate schools. I've been looking into the London Metropolitan Film School but I don't know anyone who has been there, don't knwo if its good or anything and I don't want to risk it.

I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice.

thanks

Hey Blue,

I'm in the same boat. I think in the end it's going to come down to personal preference, because you'll find people directing you both ways. Some will say that the industry actually frowns upon a Master's degree in film, some will say it's advantageous. What is more or less agreed upon, though, is that an undergraduate and graduate degree in film is redundant and unnecessary.

It sounds to me like you're into the graduate programs (AFI only has graduate program, and I get the feeling London Metro is the same...) so I'd suggest thinking about other interests you have (possibly that will enhance the films you're going to make) and study those in undergrad, make films, get experience, don't lose you're fire, then hone your craft in grad school.

But, again, it's going to come down to personal preference.

Good Luck.

Hey!

Thanks for your response.
It seems like the best idea would be to study something else at uni and then try to get into one of the big places in the US like AFI, NYU and so on.

What do you reckon would be a good undergraduate course to take? I was thinking of something in the social sciences, like politics, but I'd like to know other peoples' opinions.

What I definitely think I should do is start doing stuff on my free time (film-related I mean), like my own projects and stuff because getting into the good places in the US is quite competitive and often requires you to present stuff you've done, doesn't it?

Thanks for your help Smile

Well, if you're going to wait for grad school....

Major in whatever you want, not with film school in mind...my MFA class has physics and polysci majors, former attorneys, pastors, and med students.

The more diverse your life (and education), the more stories you have to tell!
