I want to be a Video Editor. Which school should I be looking at? I looked at USC but, it seemed to be more in general.

What do you mean by "video editor?" Not film, only music videos or...??

USC allows you to take tracks/emphases. You can easily focus on editing there, I know several folks that do.

Most production programs offer the same situation, while Chapman and AFI offer a conservatory approach, where you edit and only edit. Just be wary, though....I'm not sure about Chapman, but at AFI, once an editor, always an editor...so if you're not sure that editing is for you, you won't be able to change majors in such a program.

The more general production programs, however, allow you to dabble your first few semesters if you need to, and you aren't locked into a major.

If you are looking at undergraduate schools, the section where you are posting in, I think that most schools are very broad in terms of curriculum, allowing you to venture into every field and find a niche. Schools that I know for a fact offer emphases are Columbia College Chicago, Columbia College Hollywood, and Art Center College of Design (these are schools I have looked at). After two years you are allowed to pick a concentration or stick with the general "film production". CalArts is said to have a flexible program allowing students to follow their creative paths... I don't necessarily know what that means but they may allow you to focus on a particular craft. My advice would be to look at schools you are interested in and take a look at their courses to see if they have several electives or tracks in editing.
If you ARE talking about music video editing, I don't really know of any other schools except Full Sail, if that, that offer it.

My suggestion is, make sure you know you really want to be an editor. In your undergrad years, you should be able to experience all the aspects of film making. Explore that and think about it again. If you really feel like you prefer editing the most, then go for it. Try browsing through this forum (undergrad) and the grad forum for more information on various schools as well as the current student's opinion on their school.

What everyone else said.

As a working editor in Hollywood I would like to say that you should be as broad in your studies as possible.

Editing isn't about knowing the technology - that's easy.

Editing is storytelling. So if you can hone the craft of telling a story, etc... you can be a good editor.

Anyone can cut pretty pictures together. Not everyone can tell a story. Hone that craft and you'll be fine.

Read up on all of the editing books that are about theory - there's a a great one that is a bunch of conversations with Hollywood editors - I'm blanking on the name now.

Study films for how they're edited.

As for which film school to go to? Any of the good film schools will provide you with the film education you need. Offer to edit projects for people at the school. Offer to assist. Intern at real post houses. Etc etc etc...

Hope this helps. I'd highly recommend against concentrating on specifically editing for undergrad. It may be something you enjoy and strive for (as it was the case for me) but I dabbled in everything in film school.
