i reaaally want to go to NYU or USC undergrad in the fall term of 2007 but i dont have a portfolio piece. this summer i had to chose between going to NYFA and getting a strong portfolio piece or going on a 5 week program to thailand and vietnam doing community service/homestay/travel and i finally decided on thailand and vietnam.. i was thinking about bringing a camera with me to thailand and making a short montage of the people and culture with some good music... but is that not strong enough for a portfolio piece? please help... thank you...

You made the right decision. USC and NYU really don't care that much about portfolio (especially USC), all they really want are high grades and tests scores. You should take some time to look at both of their applications now and you can get a feel for what they want.
