I am in the process of applying for film schools but would like some input on how people in the field feel about a degree vs. a certificate. Is the degree a necessity in the film industry?

It is in no way a must. A certificate is good and will land you a job, but a degree will most likely cut years out of your journey. If you just start working, it will take you a while to move up. But if you get a degree you will start higher and usually make more money. Keep in mind its still all up to you, going to a good film school isnt going to make you a good filmmaker unless you put in your hard work. Just do what works best for your own personal situation and as long as your passion is there you will be where you want to in no time.
