I'm better than all than all the guys who have replies thus far. Go to my site www.mp3.com/jjvh/

My influences are Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Aaron Copeland, and Leonard Bernstein. I can write like John Williams, but he is not one of my influences.

Plus, I have my own production studio to do the entire score. I've worked with live orchestras, and I use professional samples.

Oh really... so you're better than the rest of us, huh. I hope that was meant as a joke.....

That's cool, but like I said in my introductory post my wife is an 'Agent' at one of the big three here in LA. Any director should realize the importance of that, it's virtually impossible to get someone of that caliber to view your film. If the director is awesome, well, then you know what kind of opportunity that would lead to........

just say'n

Hey, just play'n ball with you, Jonathon wink

Yeah I agree, it sure doesn't "sound" very good. He seems to have a grasp on composition, but the mix is a different story. I would also suggest using better samples. It needs to sound like a finished work. I listened to most all of his works, while I think it's fairly good, I don't necessarily like the sound (and mix).

Perhaps it should sound more like THIS.... ? wink

Sorry for being so arrogant, but it's the only way I can get people to listen. As for the sound quality, I really don't pay that much attention to it. Those are just mock ups, before my orchestrator got a crack at it.
The reason the strings sound muted is I prefer the old analog recordings of Max Steiner and Franz Waxman. The new digital drivel is pure crap. I want hisses. I want pops. I want it to sound distinctive. As for better samples, I have not yet found a sample bank I'm willing to spend money on, save for a few French horn samples

What do you think of the melody and theme structure, orchestration and sound quality aside?

Hmmm? I don't know why the strings sound fuzzy (they are from the Miroslav library).. maybe it's the MP3 wink. The harp, yeah that's what I was going for, I wanted it to sound more like a bass acoustic guitar, so I comped each note then chopped off the fron t end. Thanx for checking it out, James!

bTW... I'm more of a hybrid composer.

The verbs are actually a TC FireworX, an M-one, and the verbs from the D8B. I'm getting the M-3000 any day now so I should be covered, hopefully. wink

Yes, I did listen to you r stuff as well, probably two weeks ago. I recall thinking it was pretty good. I'll go back and listen again just to refresh my memory.....

Jonathon Vandergriff-

I hear you... Perhaps you could have chosen better wording, though? Yes it's a tough worl d out here. Do whatever it takes to get the job but try not to offend people along the way, no one forgets quickly razz. We are all hustling so lets keep it they way it should be, like a brotherhood of sorts. We're all going for the same goal.... to be r ich and famous... Oops, I meant to be artistically valid composers... big grin Good luck to you!

BTW... I have to agree with you about the strings. I would love to have something a little more "dirty", with the subtle imperfections left in. Perhaps "Vienna" is the answer? We'll see....

****BTW.. I've got some more hyper links right HERE (scroll down to see the links in green)

Have a good one guys!

James... I hear you on the Sonic Implants Symphonic String collection! That and a Giga system is next on my list. Do you mind if I ask what you paid for yours (did you build it yourself?)... Also, do you find you
have enough power on just one or do you run a couple (or more) of them? BTW... what is your set up?

Those strings are so silky!!! Damn good is right!

Jonathon-

Do yourself a favor and listen to the Sonic Implants Symphonic String collection samples HERE!!!.... seriously they are awesome.

Yeah tell me about it... I know, I need a Giga-system a.s.a.p.! I'm looking to get it in early Feb. I'm thinking, like, $3,500 for everything including the Symphonic String collection, hopefully that will be enough cash to get a Giga-system with some powe r (I know nothing about pc). But yeah, I actually have two macs right now, a dual G-4 and a G-3. I run DP3, Reason 2.0, and Pro-Tools LE on them. Video sync through DP3 using quicktime, or VTR smpte out to the Midi TimepieceAV. To digitize I use the Canop us ADVC-100
into I-movie. Four monitors is enough for now! wink

That's interesting the way in which you work, I'm one of those guys that plays everything note for note then tweak it as I go. I'm old school in the sense that I like touching faders when I m ix (just a preference).

But yeah, I'm definitely getting a Giga, I know it's the right move (I mean, I already have $50,000 into my studio, what's another $3,500 wink ). I just visited a friends studio who has, like, 5 of them! I was totally impressed with the possibilities. He also assured me that one would be enough for now.

Thanks for the great info, very helpful and very much appreciated!

BTW... Where are all the directors? Is the new trend silent movies??? ha...ha.. big grin

Even silent films have music!

Not if they don't hire a composer... I was just making a joke. wink

Yeah, supposedly my buddy will be able to get me a deal on the set up (don't really know what that means?) I'm gonna start out with the one library possibly a few others like VSL and build from there. I wanna see what's up at NAMM before I do anything, though! I guess I'll have to spend about 10k on sounds to get where I need to be..... frown

But no, I haven't heard for Iain either?
