etc.

Windows Movie Maker is practically useless as a video editor, since you can only save in WMV.

Get some good software like Vegas Video 3 and you'll be able to. I heard that AVID has a free version of their software now, so you could check into that.

If all else fails, you can always go onto Kazaa and download Final Cut or Adobe Premiere. I would recommend Adobe Premiere because it seems that you're a beginner and Premiere is a lot easier to work with. Trust me.

(And yes, I'm aware of the big arguement that erupted last time someone on this forum mentioned pirated software, so I'll go on the record as saying that you should only do that "if you already own the software and want to waste additional computer space with an identical program", OK?)

first off, it only drives up the prices of the software.

second, you can easily download an virus infected or incomplete version of the program, and it can screw with things with your computer.

third, its completely unethical. there are plenty of good editing software programs that are within your price range that can do titles. heck, if you have a mac, imovie2 comes with it and it can do titles.

or just save up a couple hundred dollars and buy adobe.

Didn't you see my disclaimer?! I specifically said to only download the program if you already own it. I was trying not to get people in here debating the topic of the ethics of pirated software!

Bah!

I have it and must say that it is excellent for the price (about$60) Get it. Has all the nice premiere stuff EXCEPT for like transparency(chroma-keying) and maybe a few others I'm too lazy to list. GET IT..trust me..ooh, and most importantly, you ain't shit without a good story....

Don't overwhelm yourself with learning the tough stuff (Like After FX, Avid, ect. Cool) Some people spend so much time learning it and then are sitting down there like "I'm all set.." but they don't even have a movie to edit. The end.

PINNACLE Studio 7 or 8 is a good inexpensive ($50-$70 depending on where you buy it) program. I have both PREMIERE and PINNACLE and there are some things that PINNACLE will do a bit easier.

It has good features, TitleDetko for text, SmartMusic for adding music and dozens of fades, wipes, etc. Very easy to use, too.

And Screenwriter is correct about the script (despite the fecal description!) - a good story is very important. If you have a good story, plan it and shoot it well, you can edit it with a camcorder and TV/VCR (though harder to do!). It's not the equipment, it's what you do with it!

Good luck.

Hmm, I would say after using Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, and IMovie (I have yet to use Avid since Im not that good yet). That IMovie would be your best bet. But since that would require you to purchase a Mac, I doubt thats an option. If you are a student then most companies will offer fantastic student discounts, (As much as %80 off), that way you can legally purchase the software.
