I'm cutting a documentary now and for the first time I'm using Script Sync on a Media Composer... and I am in LOVE. Drooling unconditional love.

Now this is surprising even to me, but even as someone who used to work at Avid itself over ten years ago, and as someone who has been editing on a Avid Media Composer for 10 years, I've never really used Script View extensively before and never really understood how I'd use it. I knew what it did - but I never really understood how it would help me edit.

Perhaps it's because all of my previous assistants had never set it up for me and it was a pain to use before. But now it is an absolute dream. It is really going to change how I edit. I always kind of edited this way - but it was something I had to manually set up - but this does it all automatically.

What script sync does is you load the script up into the Avid and then it basically becomes a Lined Script that you can access and you click on a take in the script and it plays that clip.

The most mind blowing thing about it - and what has been causing me to fall in love - is that it has VOICE RECOGNITION built in... so you click on a line in the script and you can play each take of that line that was shot! I'm amazed really.

I did this manually before by creating a selects sequence but it really was quite an arduous process before. When a director asks can I see every read of a line, instead of finding my selects sequence and going through to find the line, I simply load up the script view, go to that page, click on the line and it plays all the lines. Note how I said "lines" not "clips" - it just plays that line from each clip.... automatically. It's freaking amazing.

Now for the doc I'm doing now we had it script sync to the transcripts of the interviews.

If I'm looking for a certain line that I can use to "frankenbyte" a sentence to example replace a "he said" with a "Mr. Bill said" for clarity - I can find all the examples of that in seconds. Amazing.

I'm in love. I've re-fallen in love with Media Composer. And I'm an Avid guy - so that's quite a feat.

If Avid would really just spend some time to explain this to people.... they would be blown away.

It's almost like how I felt when I first edited Multicam on an Avid. (over 10 years ago - sorry FCP)
