Yeah, I just got an e-mail notification... although, I've been trying to read reviews/contact students and it seems like it's a love it or hate it school. Not much in the way of consensus...

I got an acceptance email today. Has anyone know about their University Fellowship Fund? Here's the quot from the email: "It is a very competitive grant which if given will allow you a three years tuition remission and a yearly stipend of about $18.000." Does anyone know what the chance is for a film production student to get this fund?

I've been accepted to UT Austin and Temple. UT has always been my top choice, but the funding opportunity at Temple sounds very tempting if I can actually get it, so any kind of information on that or any comparison between these two schools will be appreciated.

Hi, same here, accepted to UT Austin and Temple and also looking for comparison - I got a fellowship of 7,500 towards yearly tuition for just one year from UT Austin, and didn't get it from Temple, I don't know if you have to apply separately?

As far as the program, Temple places a lot of stress of "socially aware" films / production - while this is actually close to my back ground/ interests, I am leaning towards UT Austin because it challenges my comfortability towards that slant. It also places equal emphasis on documentary / narrative -it sounds like its facilities would be better too?

maziz,

Congrats on the fellowship from UT! I know they're cutting budget so this shows how competitive you are! I don't think I applied to the fellowship at Temple separately.

As far as emphasis, what I heard from a current student at Temple is that they're also quite open with narrative now, and that most students actually choose to do narrative films for their thesis and they do have faculty specializing in narrative films too. The person I talked to is very happy with Temple's program and I didn't hear any complaint from him, so I don't know how unbiased his other comments are, but at least the part about narrative/doc sounded like a simple fact.

UT does place pretty equal emphasis on doc/narrative. I don't know a lot about Temple, so I'm afraid I can't compare their facilities. The Temple student did tell me they have red one(s?), and I heard that UT is also buying a few. I know that doesn't mean anything. I just thought it won't hurt to share any information I have.

Let me know which school you end up choosing!

I got accepted to Temple and waitlisted by UT Austin. It's interesting the amount of overlapping applicants to these two schools.

Temple is not a good choice for serious filmmakers, but that statement depends upon what you consider serious. However, I can speak to the financial aspect and tell you it's not good; they lure you in with the promise that "all second-years get funding" but what they don't say is:

1) That's an outright lie.
2) Ass-kissing and groveling are the major factors in deciding who "deserves" funding.
3) Even if it weren't, the wording is important--"funding." Not FULL funding, not even generous funding.

Also, Temple University and other PA-funded schools may lose up to 50% of their funding this year thanks to Gov. Corbett and they're making cuts accordingly. The school has changed their policy so that current grad students cannot be hired as adjuncts, so if they don't have the money to offer you a full Teaching Assistantship (and there's always a few, even in that second year class, who get screwed) they can't offer you ANY job.

Finally, consider this--who in the Temple faculty have you heard of? Who is their successful grad? NYU has Scorcese, UCLA has Francis Ford Coppola, USC has George Lucas, Columbia has Kathryn Bigelow, etc. Temple grad students end up teaching, if they're lucky.

Source: Made this mistake a couple of years ago.
