Hello Everyone, I started a new folder for us to keep track of everyone's progress, regardless of our discipline. And before anyone tell me that their is already another folder devoted to this topic, don't bother. I feel that the other folder was created prematurely, and as a result no one had any relevant news to post. And if you've already posted your info onto other folders, just copy and paste it in this folder. I'm sure we all would like to know who is going where.

Bio: 30 years old (still not used to seeing that number...). Graduated UC - Berkeley '03 with a Computer Science Degree. Worked 8 years as a software developer at several different companies including Rotten Tomatoes and CNET. Work was great, secure and lucrative, but realized two years ago my passion is filmmaking. Quit the software world and spent the last two years learning everything I could about film and shooting shorts. Have had a few shorts get into festivals.
GPA: 3.5
GRE: 1380

USC (Film & TV Production) - Interviewed, Accepted Fall 2011

I had every intention of applying to NYU - Tisch Asia and Chapman. I even had rec letters sent to those schools. But I fell hard for USC when I visited there last October. What can I say? It was love at first sight. I couldn't even look at another school. ;-)

Well, I was born and raised in Southwest Louisiana, and because I discovered my ambition a little later in life, I attended and graduated from the local open enrollment state school just because I didn’t bother to apply anywhere else. I exited with a lackluster B+ GPA (History major, English minor), having only gone to class half of the time, not because I was an insane partier or social princess, but because I would go to the library and read or research what I felt like learning that day or even just daydream instead of attending lecture. Yup, I was a bright fool. Haha.

During the 6 years between then and now, I pursued all sorts of things. Except creative things. One has to be practical, after all. Retail, teaching, nonprofit management, missions work. I was pretty passionate about the latter, but decided that (a) I couldn’t stomach begging for my living, um, I mean “raising support” and (b) After three years, several short-term missions, a dozen third world countries, broken hearts and crises of faith later, I decided that I had better not go around spreading something I wasn’t even sure I believed anymore. I was living in Florida those 3 years and just moved back to Louisiana a little over a year ago to plan what’s next.

I decided I wasn’t cut out for anything except telling stories, kicked practicality to the curb and applied to film school. Briefly thought about doing a Writing MFA, but two years working alone in an office taught me that I probably wouldn’t be fond of the solitary life of a writer and chose instead the collaborative world of film.

BTW, I'm 30. :-O

Interesting thread. My life as a grad school applicant:

UCLA: Rejected (screenwriting)
USC: Accepted, Fall 2011 (Film/Television production)

I got the rejection from UCLA in early February, and pretty much thought I was screwed. USC was my reach school. I was shocked (and ecstatic, and terrified, all at once) when I got accepted to USC 2 weeks later.

I'm 28, and did not graduate high school. I spent my late teens/early 20's in a tailspin, and finally started rebuilding myself about 5 years ago when I quit doing meth (nastiest stuff on earth -- it almost killed me) and got a decent job and my GED. I then did 2 years at community college, am almost done with 2 years at the University of Washington, earned a GPA (so far) of 3.73, and will be getting my bachelor's in English in June. Didn't take a GRE. I have absolutely no filmmaking experience whatsoever, aside from two screenwriting classes and a couple of digital video final projects shot on a flip camcorder.

I still don't know how I got in, either. But I'm gonna latch onto it and ride it for all it's worth!

Bio: I'm 26, born and grew up in China. I lived in parts of China that had drastic differences in terms of social, economic, even cultural statuses. The growing disappointment at reality made me believe I should devote my life and energy in intellectual or artistic work. The former seemed more realistic for me, so I moved to the States several years ago for graduate school, hoping to become a successful scholar. On my way there, I started to doubt the meaning of what I had been reading and writing. Yes, I was with highly intellectual people, researching and discussing obscure topics that most people would have a hard time understanding; everyone around me seemed to feel really good about themselves; everyone saw themselves a future elite; no one was worried about or ashamed of the alienation between their work and the society, the "ordinary" people, the poor, the discriminated, the ignored… I had always been interested in and compassionate with people and always felt a creative urge in me, but never thought of developing it into a career until about 1 and half years ago, when I was not happy about the highly conceptual academic work anymore, experienced a trauma that changed my view of life, and started taking screenwriting and basic production/editing classes. I finally found the outlet for all my emotions and creativity. I haven't felt so passionate about something for a long time. Last year, I made a short documentary almost all by myself and submitted it to film schools, preparing to get rejected – I believed my lack of experience in film production would have hurt me more than it actually did (hope this is encouraging for those who are passionate about filmmaking but lack experience like me).

I applied to the MFA in Directing/production at:

UT Austin- accepted.
Temple - accepted and nominated for a fellowship but didn't end up getting it.
UCLA - interview request, but I had to sadly cancel it two nights before because UCLA is much more expensive than UT.
SFSU - accepted.
Emerson College - accepted with a tuition fellowship.

It's been a great experience coming to this forum and "meeting" inspiring people. Hope we all get to where we want to be!

Ohio University - Heard nada so far...

26 year old film studies/English major at a top 20 school. 3.8 GPA, 1450 GRE. Worked for a couple years as a cinematographer on microbudget ($200,000) features, but it was taking me in the wrong direction. Originally wanted to get an MFA immediately after graduating; figured I could make things work without it after first movie I shot in college was well-received; figured wrong.

USC - Rejected

Cal Arts Film/Video - Rejected
UT Austin - Accepted
FSU - Interview, no word back but assuming Austin doesn't wow me it's my top choice, even above the schools from which I was rejected

Only school I applied to.

Went to film school at Drexel for undergrad. 24 years old. Worked in LA for 3 years crewing and shooting.

25 years old from China. went to Communcation University of China for undergraduate study and transfered to Ohio University to study film, guraduated 2010.

NYU- accepted
UCLA- intervew
AFI- not heard
USC- rejected

NYU is always my NO.1 choice.
