The story behind it is cool too. Herzog, in order to inspire fledgling filmmaker, Errol Mooris, to make his film, "Gates of Heaven" which is a terific documentary about, well look it up, it's one of the best documentaries ever, and Herzog said that if Morris completed the film, he would "eat his shoe at the premiere." Thus, it was cooked with garlic, herbs and stock for 5 hours and eater by Herzon at the premiere. Pretty cool little story, and pretty cool documentary about the story.

You shouldn't link to stolen videos. I know Les Blank and I guarantee he didn't allow utube or whoever posted it to put his film on the Internet.

I am to Les Blank, not the pirates. Youtube is a goliath incubator for pirates and small, independent, low-budget filmmakers like Les and Werner don't have the resources to fight them all the time.

Maybe you should find a more suitable message board to share pirated films than a independent, low-budget, student filmmaking web site.

And this is bad publicity because? I would have never known bout this if it wasn't for this thread. I'd never know how interesting Herzog was if it wasn't for this. I'd never know who Les Blank was if it wasn't for this. So take a long walk off a short pier.

The short film can be found on the criterion collection of "Burden of Dreams"

The short film is not making any money and I see no harm. If youtube chooses to take it down than so be it. Untill then let it inspire you, and don't upload any of your short films to youtube.

You guys don't get it. Every person that sees his movies for free is a person he doesn't get to charge to see his film. He should be able to decide who gets to watch his movie for free and who gets charged (and under what context his film is shown). That's that's the whole point of copyright.

Taping a baseball game and playing it back is legal, as ruled by the supreme court. I'm tempted to think that same ruling (to paraphrase, "you can make a copy of a TV show for later viewing") might apply to downloading TV shows, but I'm not going to be the one to test the theory.

Like YouTube has the time or the money to search the thousands of videos uploaded every day for copyright violation. It's well known that's exactly what they don't do. I was agreeing with Joren's perfectly valid point.

Joren, I do have to say, it's not anyone's fault for linking to stolen videos. As crappy as the state of copyright online is, this sort of thing is nothing new and if it's there people will watch it. If the OP hadn't linked to it, that would have done precisely nothing for its case. It's not your duty to try to protect the copyright on that. It sucks, especially since you know the guy, but Ryan's doing nothing wrong linking to it, and you can't help by telling him not to.

Did you just ignore my previous post? Either I take your word, or the word of the general consensus of the internet and the article I posted and every other like it. YouTube may try to do some copyright enforcement but it's very obviously close to nothing. Your argument fails, because I already proved it to you.

TD, I think Joren was adressing the irony of posting a copyrighted short film on a student film forum. We're encouraging the very thing that may hurt us later if we are to assume we make it in the very business we're trying to get into.

So, is it cool to link to a pirated online copy of a studio movie, like Lord of the Rings? If so, maybe there should be a whole forum on the main page where people can trade movies. From the ToS, you can't post questions regarding obtaining software piracy. It says, "SF does not support software piracy." But SF does support other piracy? If it were a link to pirated software, you would have removed it. If it were a link to porn, you would have removed it. If it were a link to pirated music, you would have removed it. Are these "not anyone's fault for linking..." too? Very hypocritical.

I realize I'm making a big deal out of one little link. But it's the trend and laissez-faire attitude toward pirated videos online that's the big deal and I'm very surprised a website for students creating intellectual property would tolerate it.

it should come as no surprise as this site is dedicated to, in addition to forum and conversation about film in various fasions and definitions, filmmakers, those of who use their own money to put their work online for others to see for free. I myself would have no problem with other ppl freely looking at any of my work, at any time, in fact i encourage it (see the links at the bottom, my signature?). now maybe u should do some research as to why the film industry moved west in the first place, then ull see how we're all pirates. Arggg matey!
