Parasocial is a witty and sharply crafted short film that blends dark comedy with a slice of crime thriller. Directed and made while attending Woodrow Wilson High School, this 17-minute piece showcases the potential of a young filmmaker’s creativity and resourcefulness. Shot on an iPhone and edited using Premiere Pro, the film highlights the director's ability to make the most of limited resources, while delivering a compelling and well-paced narrative.

The story revolves around Ricky, a naive college student who becomes infatuated with his roommate Dylan, an amateur criminal running an illegal horse meat operation. The film explores the tension between admiration and manipulation as Ricky is drawn deeper into Dylan's dangerous world. When the heat from the police grows too intense, Dylan cunningly manipulates Ricky into taking on his illegal activities, leading to a series of hilarious yet dark misadventures.

The standout performances from the leads bring the absurdity of the situation to life, with Ricky’s transformation from idolizer to unwitting accomplice being both tragic and comedic. The dynamic between the characters is engaging, and the tension between them grows as the story progresses, enhanced by the looming threat of the police.

Despite its limited duration, Parasocial maintains a tight narrative structure, weaving in suspense and humor while exploring themes of power dynamics, deception, and the dangerous consequences of idolization. The film's use of a boom mic and iPhone camera proves that you don’t need extravagant equipment to create a standout piece. The dialogue-driven scenes are effective, and the chemistry between the characters adds depth to the chaotic, comedic plot.

Winning Best Student Film at the Houston Comedy Film Festival, Parasocial is a strong demonstration of what can be achieved with a limited budget and a strong creative vision. This short film is a humorous yet thought-provoking exploration of the darker side of relationships, idolization, and the lengths people will go for those they admire.

Review for "Parasocial"
Pros: Plot, directing, editing, acting
Cons: cinematography, lighting
I really enjoyed watching this short film. I thought it was very creative to make a crime a comedy film, which is quite unique since most of the times we see thrillers or mysteries. The story was well written, it was engaging and interesting. My favorite part was the acting. I could tell that these actors were young but they still did a very good job presenting each character vividly; especially with some of the characters that are supposed to seem older, they still portrayed them well and even made the film even funnier. However, like I mentioned, both the cinematography and lighting could be improved as I was able to see some shaky and over exposed shots. Overall the filmmakers did a really nice job and this is a decent film.

Yes, the overexposure was something I didn't learn how to fix until a year later. Definitely have learned a ton since this project. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch this, your review means a lot!
