Colours

Colours follows Juan, an androgynous young person whose gentle, feminine expression makes him a target of relentless bullying in his community. Neighbors and peers pressure him to “act like a man,” policing the way he walks, speaks, and exists. The constant rejection weighs heavily on Juan, pushing him into isolation and deep emotional distress.

Standing firmly by his side is Maria, Juan’s closest friend. Refusing to accept a world that labels difference as a flaw, Maria challenges the community’s cruelty head on. Through courage, empathy, and unwavering loyalty, she confronts harmful beliefs and demands space for compassion and understanding.

As tensions rise, Colours becomes a powerful story about identity, friendship, and resistance showing that authenticity is not a mistake, and that acceptance can begin with one brave voice willing to stand up for another.

Latest reviews

Emotionally Impactful but Stylistically Uneven
Pros: >Meaningful, thoughtful message on mental health.
>Strong emotional engagement.
Cons: >The film relies heavily on continuous panning between characters during dialogue scenes rather than cutting between shots, which occasionally slows the pacing.
> At times, uncontrolled ambient sound in select locations compromised dialogue intelligibility and weakened the overall sound mix.
COLOURS is a compelling student short film that tackles the delicate topic of mental awareness with sensitivity and emotional clarity. The film blends powerful visuals with a thoughtful narrative that resonates long after watching. As a short format piece, it uses its runtime effectively to highlight key moments and provoke reflection. The performances feel genuine, and the direction shows promise. There are a few moments where I wished certain themes had more time to develop, but overall the film delivers a strong message in a compact, impactful package. It’s a poignant example of what student filmmakers can achieve when addressing important real-world topics.
