THE SPRING SEASON OF THE SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT FUND IS NOW OPEN!

2024-SDF1-Is-Now-Open-Forums.jpg

Every screenwriter, at some point, struggles to finish their script, whether that's due to the dreaded writer’s block, plotting issues, or just finding the time to sit down and write.

That’s why we created our Script Development Fund, to help you find the time to finish your screenplay with dedicated support from our expert team.

Our Cash prizes will allow you to go on a writer’s retreat, take time off work, or use the money any way you see fit to meet your writing goals.

Plus, our Head of Education & Script Development, Lee Hamilton, will be there to offer one-to-one support and feedback as you develop your script over 12 months.

“I know the pitfalls of writing a screenplay. I’ve been there! I also happen to know a great deal about looking at a screenplay from the reader’s perspective, which is why I’m excited to help two upcoming writers overcome the same hurdles, share my industry knowledge, and be part of a 12-month journey that will ultimately help them to develop their core ideas into the final drafts that will showcase their talent to the world” -Lee Hamilton.

An Interview with Our 2023 Script Development Fund Winner

Christy Smith-Sloman won second place in our 2023 Script Development Fund with her feature TO BE YOUNG, GIFTED & BLACK; THE LORRAINE HANSBERRY STORY.

In this interview, we learn more about how the Script Development Fund has helped Christy finish her script and what inspired Christy to write her story.

“I’m having such a great time working with Lee. It’s like a dream come true. Writing a screenplay is such a lonely endeavor. And it’s even harder to get anybody to read it. Her notes have been completely spot on and she’s really helping me elevate my script.”- Christy Smith-Sloman.

THE FINAL CALL FOR ENTRIES CLOSES MAY 10TH!

OutHere-2024-FD-forums.jpg

While queer representation is improving, according to the GLAAD TV report for 2022-2023, there was actually a decrease of 1.3% in LGBTQ+ characters, on scripted primetime American broadcast series, from the previous year.

We are seeking to counter that – opening doors and celebrating LGBTQ+ stories that focus on strong characters that reflect the reality of LGBTQ+ lives today.

Writers are invited to submit the first five pages of their script, a one-page synopsis, and their logline to the contest. You can enter a full-length script, along with the synopsis and logline, although in the first round, we will only be reading the first five pages, not including your title page.

This competition is about championing queer characters and stories, particularly those that celebrate joy, community, and family. Queer audiences, as well as cishet allies, want to see LGBTQ+ characters whose queerness isn't a plot point, they're just queer because that's who they are.

To further support this focus on community, we are inviting the Top 5 Finalists to an online meeting with the Judges, where the writers can make a short oral online presentation to advocate for their script, and in the same meeting, have the opportunity to receive feedback and answer any questions the Judges may have.

After that the Top 5 Finalists will be asked to submit their full script – be that Feature screenplay, TV Pilot, Short Film, or Animation.

The Final Deadline for the 2024 OutHere LGBTQ+ Screenwriting Contest is on May 10th, at 11:59 PM Pacific Time! Submissions cost $40 US.
