How to make the sound of lightning?

The director wants to have the sound of lightning in one scene. How to create that?

you mean thunder. lighting doesn't have a sound.
well, you could go record a real thunder storm.
or search the internet and the numerous free-sound-effects websites for a thunder effect.

a large piece of sheet metal will make really great thunder sounds. Where you get that, I don't know. I agree that if you don't need a specific thunder, sounddogs.com will be your best, cheapest, lest hassle bet.

Wait until a thunderstorm and record it. How much do you need? I have a pretty good quality piece that I recorded when it was raining. I think there are two thunder sounds and one lightning crash. Probably not long enough.

Yeah. There's no way to create the sound of thunder without it sounding awful. Thunder has so much detail and richness to it. Best bet is to record a thunderstorm. Use two mics pointing different directions and record stereo if you can.

I did have till about a week ago a 60mins of thunderstorm sounds that i recorded last time we had some decent storms here.
