REPORTER
“Attempted murderer James Pollak has been acquitted today after his case was thrown out of the courtroom due to lack of evidence.

Camera follows James Pollak as he walks down the stairs
towards his car. It freezes on his face.

JASON STERLING Monologue
“James “jimmy” Pollak was a murderer and I knew it. How he escaped the jury was beyond me. He killed her yet he walks free and I knew there was something that we had to do about it. He had a motive and that was to get the briefcase and Sarah Smith was found dead in the middle of a park with 3 bullets in the back of her.

Flash back to the murder scene.

JASON STERLING Monologue (CONTD)
This is Robert Taylor my partner. I'd been partners with him since I started as a cop. I new everything about him and I could tell that lately he was acting a little strange around me. JASON STERLING (CONTD)
“Hey we need to get revenge on this guy I still reckon he did it”

There were a fair few spelling mistakes in that script. You may want to re-read it a couple of times. Also the dialogue was pretty poor.
And I did not get the ending. What the hell was in the briefcase? Why was Jimmy doing a deal with Pollak? It didnt make any sense to me.
Sorry to burst your bubble. Keep at it.

hi here is the new updated script hopfully the ending is explained better thanks for your thoughts

Jason Sterling then shoots Jimmy, places the gun in Jimmy's hand and walks off with the briefcase.

The end.

Ending explained

Jason did the deal with jimmy so that he could set up a situation so that he could kill Robert Taylor. The reason for killing Robert is because he is having an affair with Kate who is Jason's sterling wife. He then kills Jimmy Pollak so that he can blame him for the murder of Robert. Jason then walks away with the case Scott free. We never understand what is in the briefcase but we recognize that it's something worth having.

Ok. You answered a few of my questions. I did not get the meeting with Jimmy at first, or why he killed Robert. at least you've cleared that up.
I still don't really like the dialogue, although that is usually the hardest bit to write. And I wonder whatthe importance of the briefcase was in the film. Wouldn't it have worked just as well if there was no briefcase at all.
Just my thoughts. Good luck if you decide to film it.

I know you're from australia and all...but the dialouge doesnt seem to australian. I got confused of why they were saying mate, but the rest of the convo seems to be a californian or something. Work on that though. But I like the story.

the reason for the briefcase, is so that Jimmy doesn't get too suspiciouse and he has a reason in his mind that to kill sara. Can you give me some good tips about dialog as this is my first script and i'm a little confused. should i have some like deep meaning analoygies like Tarantino's films as he is my main inspiration. wat do u think maybe you could help me with this

Just remember this, dialogue is hugely dependent on what type of film you are makin. Thrillers should have very deep and semi artistic dialogue. Comedies should be witty. But for an action film, it should sometimes be cliche and to the point. I don't know if that helps but that is what I know about dialogue.

Hall, I did not have a chance to read your entire script but I will make a few comments on the first monologue:

ASON STERLING Monologue
“James “jimmy” Pollak was a murderer and I knew it. How he escaped the jury was beyond me. I wanted to get revenge on this guy and there was something that we had to do about it.

--- This is a bad line becuase it is too "telling" and "descriptive." It undermines the intelligence of the viewer. In other words, you need to be more subtle. Your dialogue "literally" explains the thoughts and intentions of the character. You would be wise to learn subtlety as well as develop a sensitivity for "sub-text"- the desires/thoughts underneath the actual dialogue. Keep in mind that like real people, characters in stories often exaggerate, simplify, and deceive themselves and others with their words intentionally and unconsciously. For example, a possible re-write could go like this:

Ason Sterling (Monologue)
How did Polak get away? (this brief line is enough to convey your idea. The "revenge" aspect can be visualy created by a contextual flashback or some other clue later in your story).

Generally, monologues, voice-overs, and flashbacks should be avoided, especially if you are a first time writer. Even the most experienced writers, struggle writing VOs that are not cliche or a substitute for good dramatic dialogue.

Read "Screenwriting" by Syd Fields for a basic overview, the "Writer's Journey," for inspiration, and "Story" by Robert Mckee for almost scientific analysis.

Lastly, don't be discouraged! The fact that you have actually written something makes you better than most people who just dream. Keep at it!

thanks for your great feed back so far . i do understand where your coming from with monolouges but i need to sort of get to the piont fairly quickly as it is to go for no loger than ten mins. another great film in my mind that uses monoluge well is in fight club. Also wat do u think about the momlouges in the beggining of snatch.

Forrest Gump has good voiceover work. He uses voiceovers for the whole movie. Also... remember the titans...the begining of the movie and also the end. That has some good ones as well. Hope I helped.

yes, fight club is a great example of a success story in using monologue. However, I haven't seen Snatch.

You need to keep in mind, a 10 min. film does not need to be a "full" story. Meaning, a story with a 3 Act stucture, or a complete "beginning, middle, and end."

Often times, 10min. shorts focus on a certain event or period in a person/peoples lives.

Check out some of the BMW shorts @ BMWFILMS.com.

The other thing is, exposition is sometimes more effective and less "cheesy" when it is done in the "direction" of the film, rather than the writing.

As the director/writer, you need to decide what elements to keep or discard. In a 10min short, you really have to be ruthless - since the majority of the time can be used up in "establishing" character and plot, rather than driving the story forward. If this is the case, the film becomes a bad documentary without a "point" or theme.

Every minute of dialogue and images in your 10min, should reveal something about the story without using "on the nose" prose.

Then how do you reveal without telling, and when does telling work? Here are some examples off the top of my head:

1. Seven Samurai - The first 5 minutes of the film gives us history, conflict, and proposed action. There is a scene where one of the farmers, Rikichi (I think that's how it is spelled) is stunned at the appearance of a lady who walks out of the burning hut of the bandits.

Rikichi himself never explains the situation with his wife, we just sense tension and some underlying issue. In something like 15 seconds, Kurosawa tells us why this character has been so senstiive about the topic of "marriage or wife," filled with animosity toward the bandits, and willing to die for vengence.

2. The Professional - The few scenes where Luc Besson esbalishes the character of "Leon." In the time span of prabably less than a minute, we understand that Leon is an isolated machine like killer. And the only sign of life in his home is the little plant. (Visual clues are what films are about, experiment with them and learn to tell your story visually. Perhaps you could even try shooting your short without dialogue. My first short film was a "silent" film. I intentionally chose the "silent" to challenge and kind of awaken my visual sensibilities. This is not to say that there aren't films that use dialogue to advance story in a creative way. Reservoir dogs and The Usual Suspects use dialogue to create suspense, develop character, as well as reveal plot; all executed with polish and style).

If you haven't seen these films, I highly recommend them. Study how other directors tell the story "visually." It is economical (as far as time is concerned) as well as more entertaining and engaging for the audience since they themselves feel invovled in figuring out what is happening.

Hope this helps. Lastly, don't rush the script! The script is the heart of a film, there is no way to salvage a bad script. Look at all the bad scripts coming out of Hollywood, unsuccessfullly compensated and masked with effects and high production value.

whilst these rumours have hit the australian film industry i'm afraied due to VC busy time schedual he will not be appearing in acqutted
Sorry to say

hi i hav updated the script again and need more feedback thanks. so far the feed back has been positive, thanks from hall86
