One Shot- Love It or Hate It

Just reading some of those reviews for the student film "One Shot", and it seems that on an average people either love it or hate it, with only a few exceptions. Why do you think that is? Feel free to rant, rave, vent, whatever, love it or hate it. Also don't be afraid to ask any questions, 'cause I know there were quite a few, and I'm fairly sure I can answer them.

Yeah, and if this poster is okay w/ it, any questions/rants/insults about that "worms vs birds" video can be posted here also- then i can whine about how people "didn't get it"

why don't you make your own thread?

anyway, i watched one shot the other day... it was actually pretty tense, i felt. i guess i don't fall in to the "love it" catagory, but i certainly don't hate it. i thought it may have worked better as the climax of a longer movie, like the last nine minutes of a 30ish minute movie. like, the little synopsis thing was like "kids from different backgrounds..." and like, they wore different clothes, other than that, there was nothing in the FILM to suggest that. if you would have built up the characters a little more, and then shown their reactions to the situation, i think it could have been a million times more powerful. as it was, it was tense, but there was no emotional connection, i felt. however, that would obviously require a lot more production, ie other locations, a script, things like that.

those are my thoughts.
 
i agree with what stormboy said, this film needs more development and that could be shown in other scenes. But if it were up to me, i wouldnt have any other scenes. it would be the scene in the laundry room, but it would be much more developed, the characters may be shown waiting for much longer for ben to arrive with the gun and we would learn more about them through their awaiting conversation. who's nervous? who's not? and WHY?! the writing could develop these characters to the point where we know them and love or hate them in just one scene and are praying that HE gets the bullet or HE doesn't.
Filming the entire thing in just that room in real time would be very claustrophobic and pretty nervewracking to watch, hitchcocks "Rope" comes to mind, where we deal with one situation on the surface with a very dark theme underlying it all.
I love one shot as it is, it could be better, it could be worse, but i love its simply what came from us on that night. we shouldnt recap the errors made on our BABY and one day give it another try. we should learn from this experience, and take whatever went well and whatever went wrong and use it to achieve the desired affect of our future projects.

The most prevalent thing i learned THAT NIGHT: DO NOT rely on a tired BIGMOVIE and his camera to finish up your film at 3 in the morning

I don't love it or hate it. I think it was entertaining, and watching it brings major nostalgia, but I'm gonna have to agree with gabe on this one.....An irretable Mike at 3 am is no fun.
