shooting in 24fps

Yea, so I'm getting ready to shoot a short for my schools film festival. Everyone else that is making a movie are basically doing "jackass" knockoffs or crappy movies with "dude wheres my car" type storylines. What i want to do is make my 10 minute short stand out. I'm sick of 30fps because i gives it too much of that "amateurish" look, so im trying to change that. I have access to a sony trv-18 and a GL1. Im searching through the menus on the camera and I cant find that option. The closest thing i can get is 29.97, which is progressive scan. Any suggestions?

thanks

Only one MiniDV cam shoots 24p as of now and it's the DVX100. Shooting 30p (or 29.97 progressive) will help as thwere will be a small bit of blurring associated with "movies".

The GL2 has "Movie Mode" which tries to fake it. Does'nt look as good as 24p but better than regular 60i. Really the biggest thing that will make you stand out will be your lighting and composition. Work VERY hard on this. Without it the DVX footage would even just look like a documentary. Fill the frame with beauty (eithere in the literal or non literal sense) paint with light and tell a stand out story. No small task to be sure but it should set you apart from the huddled masses.

If you can't get by the 30 fps issue, what I'd say is to embrace the limits that you have and use them to your advantage. Everyone else is doing a Jack Ass thing, so instead of doing that, make a touching piece about a family and an emotional 10 minutes of their life. The 30 fps would only make it seem more real.

If you can get access to 24p, then I say go for it, since I would, but if you have to use 30 fps then try to think of how to use the format to your advantage.

Oh dont worry, my thing is as far away from "jackass" as humanly possible. Its about this workahollic student and his decent into mandess because he is studing for his SATs. Im going to go toward the way they made "the rules of attraction" and some film noir style. I dotn wanna say a whole lot because its gonna be on the site soon.

but thanks for the feedback

No, frame mode is really bad. The best thing to do is shoot it interlaced and de-interlace it in editing. You'll lose less resolution that way.

Actually, I quite like frame movie mode on my XM2. This is quite subjective but to my eye well shot movie filmed with frame mode looks quite a bit better than well shot, deinterlaced movie.
